Harvey devoted himself with great generosity to the welfare of the Royal College of Physicians, London, notably in the provision of its library. He was elected president in 1654 but declined the office on account of his age and infirmity. The painting appears to be a modern forgery, probably based on an engraving. An attempt has been made to rejuvenate Harvey’s aged features in the painting, which has been ruled out as being an authentic portrait because it shows the sitter wearing an out-of-date costume.
