The bronze is cast from a model for the bronze statue at Eastbourne (1901). William Cavendish is shown full-length, seated, turned to the front, facing and looking half-right. His left hand hangs beside the chair, holding a book, and the right hand rests on the chair-arm. He is wearing the robes of Chancellor of University in court dress with bands. There is a collar of the Garter with the Garter George over the robes and the garter around his left leg. The feet are resting on a footstool. The work is mounted on a marble plinth with an incised inscription.
