William Babington is shown seated with a mineral in is hand and chemical apparatus on the table. Babington was physician to Guy’s Hospital from 1795 to 1811. He was born in Ireland and completed his education at Guy's. He was made apothecary to the Hospital in 1781 and was promoted to Assistant Physician in 1795 and was made head Physician in 1802/1803. Babington was elected to the Royal College of Physicians in 1827.
He was curator of the mineral collection of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. He was a founder member of the Geological Society of London and served as president. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society. The mineral Babingtonite is named after him.
This work was hung at the Royal Academy in 1805 (583).
