This painting is portrait of William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721–1765). He is shown as commander of the English army at the time of the Jacobite risings of 1745–1746. The officer on horseback on the left behind the Duke is believed to be Major (later General) James Wolfe. In the background a review of troops is taking place. David Morier also painted the famous scene of the battle of Culloden, 1746, at which the Duke of Cumberland was victorious but earned the nickname 'Butcher' for showing no mercy. The Duke of Cumberland was the third son of the Prince of Wales, later George II, he became the Duke of Cumberland at four years of age.
