Having studied at Glasgow School of Art, Thomas Bonar Lyon entered the teaching profession in Ayrshire schools, taking up roles as Art Master at Irvine Royal Academy and then Ayr Academy in the late 1920s.

Bonar Lyon took influence from the works of French Impressionist painters and the Scottish Colourists. Often to be found painting outdoors (en plein air) at Dunure harbour on the Ayrshire coast, the artist captured tranquil harbour scenes and boat studies with a delicate observation of changing colour and light.
