Martin Bloch was born in November 1883 in Neisse in Polish Silesia (then part of Germany). From 1902 to 1905 he studied architecture and art at the University of Berlin. He was forced to leave Germany and emigrated with his wife and daughter to Britain. In 1947 he became a British citizen. In 1944 Bloch met Josef Herman, another emigré painter from the Continent. This led to a group of paintings depicting the Welsh landscape and the human figure in that particular landscape setting, such as quarrymen in North Wales and coal miners in South Wales.
