The sculpture builds on the nearby memorial to the 1901 and 1913 Universal Colliery disasters and, together with its setting in the gardens, commemorates all mining tragedies in Wales. Ceramic tiles throughout the grounds name all the individuals killed at Sengenydd and also name the various collieries involved elsewhere.
