Inscription description
This bronze fountain sculpture 'Water Play' symbolizes the energy co-operation and sporting spirit of youth in Dacorum. Sculptor Michael Rizzello OBE, November 1993; inscription on base: This engraving displays Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe's (CBW RA) original vision for Hemel Hempsted / town centre. Although Jellicoe's original vision was never implemented, his intention was to create a city within a park, where civic buildings, entertainment venues and restaurants were / set within the gardens of / a landscaped river. His 1947 design for the seven watergardens of The Gade started at Heath Park with a circular boating pond connecting to a serpent-like / waterway through waterhouse Street, which fed in the grand lake at Gadebridge Park instead / a much simpler scheme which incorporated the soirit of Jellicoes original vision was / implemented in the early 1960's along waterhouse Street known as the Jellicoe Water / Gardens. The gardens can be seen of looking directly through Bank Court to the west. Second Inscription : In 1993, the local artist Sheila Jessop felt so strongly / about Jellicoe's intended plans that she helped recreate / his original design on the paving through Bank Court as / part of the Marlowes pedestrianisation works. / The 2014 / 15 pedestrian area improvements in Marlowes and bank Court have incorporated Jellicoes original / plan for the water feature on this plinthto commemorate both Jellicoe and Jessops Intentions.
