We see a stringed washing line in the foreground trailing into a body of water which reflects a little bridge, tall buildings and the blue sky above. The washing line is surrounded by clothes pegs. One of the pegs remains clipped on the washing line, its shape resembling a person looking out onto the scene.

The artist John Bratby was a member of the Royal Academy, known for his social realist paintings in the style of the Kitchen Sink school. This is one of his later paintings, many of which were inspired by his trips abroad in the 1980s. The scene is reminiscent of Venice, Italy.
