The composition includes a principal pedestal surmounted by a bronze female figure, with two bronze figures on the west side of a square stone base. Curved flanking stone walls and four detached pylons all carry inscribed bronze plates. The central group symbolises the sacrifice of the British Soldier for his king and country and the gratitude of the nation. The soldier lies dead on the battlefield, gassed. He grasps the tube of his gas mask, which he has not had time to fit over his face. Britannia leans over him and places a crown of laurels over the hero. The whole group is designed to remind people for all time of the debt we owe to the soldiers. On the top of the central shaft stands a bronze figure of a woman. She symbolises the wife, mother, sister and sweetheart of the soldiers.
