Hill was a key member of the Academy in its early years serving as its Secretary 1830–1869. In addition to his diplomatic administration and his pioneering photographic work with Dr Robert Adamson, Hill was also a trained artist. Here his debt to the great works of J. M. W. Turner is self-evident. Hill depicts a sunset scene over his native city of Perth. The view looks west across the expanse of the River Tay in the foreground to the North Inch and the distant Grampians beyond. Hill’s original Diploma Deposit (also a Perthshire landscape) was destroyed by the effects of the bitumen which he used to achieve richer shadows. The present work is the first to be acquired for the Diploma Collection Annexe where such critical gaps can be addressed.
