The sculpture of a grieving mother holding her deceased child was funded by money raised to pay for the funerals of the children, killed in the Victoria Hall disaster, where 183 children died in 1883, crushed while trying to exit the theatre. The memorial was sited in Mowbury park and subsequently Bishopwearmouth cemetery where it fell into disrepair. It was significantly restored in 2002 and returned to Mowbury now in a protective case.

The design was by Brooker and the execution started by him. But, unfinished at the time of his death, it was finished by Williamson.
