François Boucher’s decorative paintings, which included mythological subjects, were extremely popular during his lifetime. This painting by him of about 1730 is now only known from prints and copies. This copy probably dates from the late 18th century. It is not known whether this copy came into the ownership of the Thellusson family through Peter Thellusson, who settled in England from France in the 1760s, but it is recorded at Brodsworth Hall in an inventory of 1885.
