This painting is an allegory of the union of the crowns, when James the VI of Scotland became James I of England. He is greeted by a lady with a bear: the symbol of Berwick. To the right, another lady symbolising the Tweed greets the king as she leads two swans. She is attended by a page carrying a model of Berwick bridge. To the left, King James' daughter Elizabeth, the founder of the Hanoverian dynasty, represents the future.

This painting was created to raise funds for the Grove Special school, once attended by the artists daughter, and was subsequently donated to Berwick Town Hall.
