Gilbert was born in London before moving with his family to Chichester. By the age of 22 he had exhibited landscapes at the Royal Academy and later at the British Institution and Society of British Artists.

Gilbert travelled extensively around the country in search of picturesque landscapes. This example is amongst the largest of his surviving works.
