This monumental painting has a classical simplicity and tenderness that contrasts with the artist's political and social allegories. It relates to the enduring tradition of the female nude in Western art, and in particular to the Orientalist depictions of odalisques, or female nudes in the harem, by artists such as Ingres, Delacroix and Matisse. The complex pose of the nude washing her feet relates to other works by Peter de Francia on the same theme.
