The right-hand portrait is a design for a plate to J.C. Lavater’s, ‘Essays on Physiognomy’, trans. Henry Hunter, London, 1789–1798, vol.II.ii., facing p.356. In the text accompanying the engraving of the Raphael, Lavater writes: ‘As much as his works are superior to those of all the artists of his class, so much is his beautiful figure distinguishable from ordinary forms’.
