Lord Carnarvon took this photograph on 16 February 1923. It shows Howard Carter and the other members of the Tutankhamun excavation team gathered for lunch in the nearby tomb of Ramses XI, Valley of the Kings, near Luxor in Egypt. The lunchers are (left to right): James Henry Breasted, Harry Burton, Alfred Lucas, Arthur Callender, Arthur Mace, Howard Carter and Alan Gardiner. Carnarvon’s chair at the head of the table is unoccupied. A few hours later, Carnarvon and Carter entered Tutankhamun’s Burial chamber for the first time, assisted and watched by those gathered around this table.
