A bronze soldier, equipped for combat with a knapsack on his back, holds a rifle in both hands at arms length horizontally across his body. His helmet is at his feet. He stands on a stone plinth with a laurel wreath carved on one side. A low wall with retaining wings, surrounds the central memorial and is set back about 1.5m from the pavement edge. The names of 766 fallen from the First World War are listed on bronze plaques on the wall. In 1946 another 35 names were added on a separate plaque listing the fallen of the Second World War. The memorial was unveiled by Colonel Viscount Hardinge.
