This is a literary scene drawn from the work of Torquato Tasso, the 16th century Italian poet best known for his epic poem 'Gerusalemme Liberata'. F. W. Watts is mentioned in the Society’s 'Transactions' in 1817, 1820 and 1821 when he was awarded the large Gold medal, in the class for artists and others for an Original Historical Painting in Oil, his subject was ‘Ubald and the Sirens' (from 'Tasso').
