Political philospher Karl Marx came to London in 1849 as a political exile. He died in 1883 and was interred in Highgate Cemetery. His body was moved in 1954, originally buried 100 yards to the south. The Cornish granite base was carved at De Lank quarry by Robert Armstrong, a resident of St Tudy, Cornwall.
