Edward Stott was a painter who was one of the founders of the New English Art Club. He moved to Amberley in 1889. A wreathed medallion on the tomb contains a relief of Orpheus, a figure from Greek mythology, with his lute. Orpheus, King of the Thracian tribe Cicones was believed to be one of the chief poets and musicians of antiquity, and the inventor or perfector of the lyre.
