Thomas Whitby (1531–1621) acquired Shugborough. His son John Whitby sold Shugborough to the Anson family in 1624 and purchased Haywood Abbey, Great Haywood. His great-grandson, John Whitby JP purchased Oakedge, Colwich around 1750. His son Reverend Thomas Whitby sold Oakedge to the Honourable Thomas Clifford and purchased Creswell Hall prior to his death in 1828.
