Thomas Chalmers was licensed as a preacher in 1799 and was ordained in 1803. In 1815 he became minister of the Tron Church, Glasgow, where he implemented a programme of church-building and social reform, and from where his reputation as a preacher spread. In 1823 he moved to the University of St Andrews, and in 1828 became Professor of Theology at Edinburgh University. In 1834, he began to lead the part of the Church of Scotland which split away from the main church in the Disruption of 1843, forming the Free Church of Scotland, of which he was the first Moderator.
