Thomas Brassey was one of the most important engineers of the early Victorian period, beginning his career in Wirral, based in Birkenhead. The grandest gesture of his career was the construction of the Grand Crimean Central Railway, built in seven weeks to relieve troops during the Crimean War. The biggest achievement was the Grand Trunk Railroad across Canada, begun in 1852. Most of these were built from prefabricated sections made in Birkenhead and exported.
