Bewick was locally a well-known figure before the founding of The Literary & Philosophical Society, not only for his work in partnership with the engraver Ralph Beilby, but also for his robust liberal sympathies. He was a member of the Society from 1799 until his death. His fame became national after the publication of his two wonderfully illustrated works, 'General History of Quadrupeds' (1790) and 'History of British Birds' (1797, 1804).
