Theodora Turner was Matron of St Thomas's Hospital and superintendent of the Nightingale training school from 1955–1965 as a time of great social change. She was born in Congleton, Cheshire and attended the Godolphin School, Salisbury. She trained at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St Thomas's from 1929–1933. She won the highest award of her year and went on to study midwifery training at the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford. In 1939, Theodora joined the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service and was involved in the evacuation of Dunkirk, served in Iran and Bari, Italy. At the neurosurgical unit in Bari she survived a mustard gas attack and dealt with heavy casualties for which Turner was awarded the Associate Red Cross. She also served as matron of the Royal Infirmary at Liverpool.
