Originally modelled in plaster in 1912, this work is one of five casts (two in lead and three in bronze) from the original. Before making the sculpture Gaudier-Brzeska sketched wrestlers in action. The way the figure's body is modelled shows a progression from his earlier admiration for Rodin's figure sculpture.
