A sailing vessel in stormy sea with a man on an upturned lifeboat on the right and a man in the sea in the left foreground. This relates to the 'Great Gale' of February 1871. Allerston painted numerous scenes from this disaster and this particular scene (with the lifeboat 'Harbinger' capsized) is one that he returned to frequently. Sometimes his paintings of individual ships are reflected in his works showing lines of sinking vessels.
