A stylised depiction of two of the workhorses that historically, used to heave trams between the ironworks of the Sirhowy Valley and the docks at Newport through the woodlands of what is now Blackwood town. They are shown, heads down, as though straining to pull a heavy load which is replaced with a medallion featuring a depiction of Blackwood. Teams of such horses would have not only pulled heavy loads of iron, coal, and equipment along this route but, through their labour, they were also pulling Blackwood into the future as the area became more and more industrialised. Each horse is filled with a decorative floral pattern containing oak leaves, a reminder of the ancient woodlands that blanketed the Blackwood landscape in 1805. A similar design surrounds the Blackwood medallion.
