A commemorative water feature depicting a jug and bowl. Originally water issued from the jug, with the lower section representing flowing water and there are mining images in inserts. The work was installed as part of the Millennium Green project from 2000 to 2002, and it was funded by the Lottery which also restored the planting on the Pond Field and created an accessible path along the Dilly Line. The artist worked with children from Greenside School and their images feature in the water flowing from the jug. 'The Wash' partly reflects the fact that it stands on the edge of what was once a pond used to wash the coal at Greenside Colliery.
