This is a painting from a panel depicting the history of the Whitehead brothers. The panels depict various events in the early history of the firm, commencing with the partnership between the three brothers in 1815. This painting depicts the Power Loom Riots 1826. The events are recorded in David Whitehead's diary: 'News came that there was a riotous multitude of people who had assembled at Accrington with a determination to break the power looms… The magistrates sent them (the cavalry) forward to Rawtenstall with an order to pursue the mob and make prisoners. But before I could get the cavalry to Rawtenstall, the rioters had been and broken all our power looms.'
