An interior scene depicting a typical Victorian working class home. The crumpled newspaper on the floor has just brought the news of the death of her soldier husband at the Crimea to the woman seated at the table. Her daughter, on the left, is old enough to be aware of all that this implies, as the family is now without any means of financial support. On the floor, however, the young boys are unaware of the tragedy and continue to play happily, if somewhat ironically, with their toy soldiers.
