A church interior, with mourners. In the centre of the picture is a large group of figures standing around a coffin covered with a dark cloth. The priest stands at the head, his back to us, reading the service. To the right of the coffin are women dressed in white, their heads bowed. On the left of the picture, leaning against part of the church architecture, waits the sexton, his spade in his hand. Above him are three stained glass windows, which cast their light on the women below. The high ceilinged church has wooden beams, and there is a high stone pillar on the right. Perhaps a painting of Wilkie's father's funeral (who died late 1812). The church appears Scottish and the minister appears to be academically dressed, as was the custom.
