The third in a series of paintings of this title, 'The Shoe Shop III' reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in the symbolic value of objects and in shops as subject matter, stemming from childhood visits to Florence. The red shoe recurs in several of Held’s paintings, particularly in relation to women. Julie Held was born in Britain in 1958 and studied at Camberwell School of Art (1977–1981), holding her first solo exhibition at the Ben Uri in 1996, since when she has held many solo exhibitions in cities including London, Leipzig, Prague and Hamburg. She has contributed to numerous group shows including The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and The Jerwood Drawing Prize and is a member of The London Group. Held’s work is held in a number of public collections including Nuffield College, Oxford; New Hall, Cambridge; and The Open University.
