Barker had a keen interest in painting portraits of ordinary working people. This is one of a series that he produced, of slightly sentimental pictures, loosely based on works by Thomas Gainsborough.

The boy in this painting is unidentified, and with his loose, smock-like coat and battered hat, we cannot even see what kind of worker he was.
