Porter is inspired by his local landscape, which he is continually exploring as his favourite subject. His paintings are about surface, with the space of a landscape implied, often he paints distant objects, the middle ground and the close-up all on the same plane without perspective. He describes himself as a landscape painter, but really because they are about such small parts of it, they become abstract. Like most of his paintings, this one is part of a series of mixed media paintings using oil and acrylic. This painting depicts the ground and as such has no horizon. Porter considered it his best painting in 2006 and it was exhibited at the Tate in that year. He is a renowned nature-inspired artist. His work has been regularly exhibited in museums and contemporary galleries in London, Europe and America and has been the recipient of numerous major awards, e.
