Maggs was a popular Bath artist who was best known for his coaching scenes. He painted one series of famous coaching inns and another of 80 metropolitan inns. These pictures were appreciated by Maggs’s Victorian buyers for their picturesque historical qualities.

He also painted subject paintings such as ‘The News of Waterloo’ and views of Bath of which this is an example.
