A late example of a type of small, historical scene first painted by Delacroix and Bonington in the 1820s. It exemplifies the freer technique which Isabey used in many of his historical pictures of the 1860s. The flame-like curve of the composition and the virtuosity of his brush convey the charged atmosphere of the subject set in the sixteenth century, probably during the wars of religion.
