Herbert Davis Richter is best known for flower paintings, but his reputation was first established as a painter of architectural and industrial scenes. Born in Brighton, Richter’s family moved to Bath when he was two. He was an apprentice in a cabinet-making firm and later studied at Bath School of Art. He and his brother Charles founded the Bath Cabinetmakers’ Company where he held the position of designer. Eventually Richter gave up design work to concentrate on painting and teaching art at the London School of Art. He exhibited regularly with the Bath Society of Artists and while living in Bath was a member of the old Bath Philharmonic and the City's Orchestral Societies. This is a fine example of Herbert Richter’s dramatic style.
