The shapes, lines and composition of Sophia Pauley's work stem from environments associated with water, especially swimming pools, lakes and the sea – her earliest inspiration was her dedication to and love of swimming. Pauley continues to visit watery vistas, now focussing on the architecture and ambience surrounding these spaces. Her current work focuses on the beauty of the urban water interface around Edinburgh, paying particular attention to the quality and precision of the painted surface, valuing its simplicity and beauty, and aiming to leave a dramatic resonating impact on the viewer. These prints are a response to the open and closed architectural spaces experienced at the Water of Leith. The layers of acrylic shapes created by the process of screen printing reflect these spaces, each unique in their arrangement.
