A twice life-size standing figure of a miner holding a pick axe, on top of a giant miners lamp. On the lamp are scenes showing a couple holding their baby, children playing with a hoop, miners digging and a pit pony pulling a cart laden with coal out of a mine. A second miner is shown crawling on his hands and knees digging in the ground beneath the lamp. The memorial commemorates the people who worked at Hucknall No. 2 Colliery, Ashfield, from 1868 until 1986. A large supermarket is now situated on the site of Hucknall No. 2 Colliery, which was commonly known as the Bottom Pit. Surrounding the statue are three boulders. These have sawn-cut faces at the front, and the name of the pit and dates carved into the top of each stone with a plaque beneath listing the names, year and age of the mining casualties.
