This work demonstrates the limited use of the punched gold to identify the saint and the holy figure in the sky, possibly God. It is a predella panel which is a narrative scene that would have been placed with others in a row under a large painted altarpiece. The style of the work suggests that the artist may have been from Florence. The donor, Alfred de Pass (1861–1952), was a Cape Town-born businessman and philanthropist.
