This painting depicts a young woman in a flowing blue gown who sits alone beside a glowing fire in an orderly drawing room. At her feet a large book with silver clasps lies discarded. Hay painted this picture in the principal room of his own home, his wife Enid was the model. Whistler's use of colour, light and tone influenced Hay's early work which is evident in the dark tonality of this painting. Hay is one of two of the most talented artists to emerge from Liverpool in the early twentieth century.
