The handling and palette of this small painting reflects Théodule Ribot's admiration for Courbet and other French Realist painters. However, the subject of the young cook helping himself to a bottle, unaware he is being observed, was intended to amuse. Cooks were also the subject of the several paintings which Théodule Ribot, who was self-taught, had accepted for the Paris Salon in 1861 following earlier rejections. Having overcome these early obstacles, Ribot achieved recognition and was presented with a special award at the Paris Exposition Universelle as well as the Légion d'honneur in 1878.
