A large block of basalt rock inscribed with place names of a 10 km radius – reflecting history and the passage of time. The work was made with the assistance of 220 members of the local communities.

THIS 19 TONNE BASALTIC BLOCK WAS SOURCED AND SCULPTED IN INDIA BY SCULPTOR JAKE HARVEY CAN BE VIEWED ON WWW.VISITKELSO.COM WEBSITE.FUNDED BY SAINSBURYS, THE STANE WAS INSTALLED ON 17.02.2014 / THE COBBLED FOOTPRINT OF THE KELSO SQUARE HAS BEEN WORN AND SHAPED BY GENERATIONS PF HUMAN, ANIMAL AND VEHICULAR TRAFFIC. IT RECORDS A PASSAGE OF TIME 'THE STANE' CONCIEVED AS A LARGE SETT (COBBLE) AND FRAGMENT OF THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE. IT ALLUDES TO THE LONGEVITY OF LOCATION AND IS A VISUAL AND MATERIAL LINK TO THE SQAURES ARCHITECTURE AND AESTHETIC. AS LANDSCAPE FRAGMENT WITH INSCRIBED PLACE NAMES , THE STANE HIGHLIGHTS KELSO'S GENERAL HUB STATUS. IT PAYS HOMAGE TO THE FOLK OF KELSO AND BORDERING TOWNS, VILLAGES AND FARM PLACES, WHO HAVE INPUT TO THE TOWNS DEVELOPMENT, PLACE NAMES ARE GATHERED FROM A 10 KM RADIUS ON AN ORDINANCE SURVEY MAP THEN FOLDED AROUND AND PLOTTED ON THE STANES FLANKS. SOME NAMES MAKE US AWARE OF LANDSCAPE USE AND GEOLOGY, OTHERSRECORD IMPORTANT HISTORICAL EVENTS AND CHARACTERS THROUGHOUTHISTORY / JAKE HARVEY COLLABORATED WITH 220 LOCAL FOLK IN MAKING THIS ARTWORK. HE DIRECTED THEM TO DRAW THEIR PLACE NAME ONTO THE STONE, WHICH HE THEN INSCRIBED, THE TOOL MARKS OF THE CARVING PROCES, CHARACTER AND FLOW OF TEXT, AND METHOD OF INSCRIPTION ARE INTENDED TO CREATE A SENSE OF SPACE AND LAYERING AND TO MAKE AND ACTIVELY DRAWN SURFACE. THE SELECTION OF NAMES IS EGALITARIAN AND BROAD WITH CONTRIBUTIONS RANGING FROM CHILDREN JUST BEGINNING TO WRITE TO SOMEONE MORE THAN 100 YEARS OLD.
