This painting was first exhibited at the International Society in 1916, and later at the Grosvenor Gallery. There is another portrait of the sitter by the artist, dated to c.1917, at Tate.

Maude Louise Lorillard was the daughter of an American tobacco millionaire. Her husband became the third Baron Revelstoke of Membland on the death of his brother in 1929.
