The artist was born in Paris. The son of an opera singer, he was predominantly self-taught as a painter. In 1834 Rousseau made his début at the Salon where he exhibited a series of landscapes from the Normandy countryside, and achieved great success with still lifes inspired by Chardin. He established himself as one of the first painters of his generation to paint and exhibit both landscapes and flower paintings. Rousseau was a favourite artist under the Second Empire, and was commissioned by the court of Napoleon III to complete many large canvases of flowers and animals. This small scale, dark and atmospheric study is a contrast to Rousseau’s normally large-scale works. The heron was a favourite motif of the artist, appearing in many of his paintings.
