A life-size plaster cast of the head of Medusa, on a polygonal base. The 'Head of Medusa' was one of Watts’s earliest sculptural designs, dating from his extended stay in Italy from 1843 to 1847. On 19th September 1846 Lady Caroline Duff, a fellow guest at the Villa Careggi in Florence, noted that Watts ‘models a good deal… he has just done a very clever Medusa’s Head’. The subject of Medusa clearly reflects Watts’s response to Florence’s celebrated Medusan imagery, represented in works by numerous artists including Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio and Cellini.
