This group portrait is a fascinating glimpse of middle-class family life in the 1830s. After this picture was painted, the family moved to Paglesham where one of the characters depicted became vicar. Members of the family are depicted in a well-appointed room taking part in activities such as playing music that show how well-off and well educated they are. Particularly interesting is the painting above the fireplace that seems to show the very picture we are looking at in place.
